What to expect - We are a very open and transparent company and believe it’s important those qualities shine through during the recruitment process, with clear and timely communication at every step. Some of our analyses are complex and require years of painstaking research and ongoing improvements. In other areas we have responded overnight to global health crises.

A Passive Revolution In Water Sampling

With 70% of the Earth’s surface covered in water, monitoring its safety and cleanliness is of constant importance. Traditional water-sampling techniques are complicated, time-consuming, and often expensive. Crucially they often provide only a snapshot of the pollution they are testing for or alternatively expensive sampling stations, which demand electricity and servicing, are required to get the full picture.

The opportunity and necessity to improve water sampling systems existed. Eurofins met the challenge with the development of Eurofins Sorbisense, a unique alternative to traditional testing – a passive sampling system improving groundwater, wastewater and surface water contamination assessment, providing better, faster and more reliable water-quality testing data.

Setting the new standard in infant formula testing

In 2008, China was rocked by a national food safety scandal when it emerged that the chemical component, melamine, which is used in plastic and fertiliser production and is harmful to humans, had made its way into infant formula and milk.

With 300,000 victims affected by the compromised milk and infant formula, the tragedy highlighted the importance of using the most stringent methods to test infant formula and was the catalyst for an initiative to modernise and improve testing methods. Having screened tens of thousands of samples for melamine levels during the Chinese scandal, Eurofins has also played a crucial role in a global initiative to overhaul, redevelop and modernise infant formula testing standards.

The Forefathers of Pesticide Testing

When pesticides were launched in the 1930s, the protection they afforded crops was lauded. However, over time, the impact of pesticides on human health has become more and more of a concern. With hundreds of pesticides sold worldwide, and more developed every year, there is ongoing pressure to ensure that foodstuffs are safe for human consumption. Pesticide analysis was typically slow, costly and imprecise but thanks to Eurofins’ innovation, a portfolio of reliable validated methods for the important analysis of pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables, baby food, tea, and tobacco has been developed, to ensure our safety as consumers.

 

Enhancing Mould Analysis

With modern construction, buildings are becoming more energy efficient, but may have limited air circulation and higher humidity levels as a result. This can lead to mould formation and bacterial growth causing health issues including asthma, itching, eye discomfort, headaches and fatigue. In 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that mould and bacterial growth should be minimised in indoor environments.

Work by Eurofins to improve testing methods to determine the presence of fungal and bacterial spores in indoor environments has resulted in much faster, more specific and detailed analytical tests. These tests increase the ability to detect a wider range of mould and bacteria species, including dead or dormant organisms.
