Meet David, who graduated in 2016 from University of Groningen with a double Master’s degree in Supply Chain Management and Technology Operational Management, and is now a Business Unit Manager (BUMa) for Asbestos Testing in the Netherlands.

What’s your Eurofins journey?
I joined Eurofins as a Master’s graduate in Supply Chain Management and Technology Operational Management from the University of Groningen, starting on the two-year Management Traineeship within Environment Testing, during which I received all the necessary management and technical trainings. At 26 years old, I became a BUMa for Asbestos Testing in the Netherlands. I’ve gained more responsibility over the last two years, now managing 50 FTEs across the Amsterdam, Deurningen, Sittard and Barendrecht labs.

What does a day in the life of an Asbestos BUMA look like?
My main responsibilities usually focus on operations, sales and business development. I oversee our sample testing and help our customers to expand their business activities, while also developing Eurofins business activities. I am in charge of everything for the labs, from buying new equipment, accrediting processes, and hiring personnel, to establishing synergies between the different locations. For instance, my team prepared the Asbestos Testing line for expansion into the German market.

How would you describe the Eurofins culture?
‘Empowerment’ is a word that comes to mind. I felt empowered by the cooperation of knowledgeable colleagues. As a BUMa, I have the flexibility and autonomy to make decisions for myself and my laboratories. I can choose how, when and where is best to get the job done.

What surprised you the most about Eurofins?
How willing even senior colleagues were to involve me in discussions and listen to my ideas, even as a new trainee.
