What are your main responsibilities?
At the moment, I’m working on Continuous Improvements for all aspects of the biggest microbiology laboratory in France. This can involve Lean management to drive costs down, waste management, new recruitment, improving processes, and more. The big question driving my work is: How can we process samples faster while complying with legal standards, improving quality, and lowering costs? The level of teamwork depends on the nature of the project, but I collaborate with colleagues around Europe from various backgrounds, who are experts in their field.
What does a microbiology laboratory do?
The food samples arriving to the microbiology laboratory vary a lot – it could be dairy, fruit or shellfish, for example. The lab analyses them to detect any pathogenic microbes or their toxins, such as Salmonellae, or organisms that cause decay, such as yeasts, fungi or moulds, to check that they meet statutory requirements and are safe for the consumer.
What has been your favourite project at Eurofins so far?
I’ve been involved in various projects since I joined Eurofins, from Quality improvement, TAT improvement, to setting up COVID-19 laboratories. Now I’m working on Continuous Improvement subjects, and my current big project is my favourite to date. It centres around special device manufacturing and automation, working with external companies. It’s a big challenge, but that means there’s a big reward.
What's your favourite thing about working for Eurofins?
I get to learn a lot because I work with very skilled people. Everyone is very professional – they get done quickly and effectively, even when the targets are every ambitious.
How would you describe the Eurofins work environment?
The lab’s operations remind me of a factory somewhat, which I like, coming from an industrial background.
What surprised you about Eurofins?
How quickly everything progresses and develops. It is the fastest company I’ve seen so far.
What advice would you give to a fresh graduate entering a related role?
Don’t be afraid to be very open when speaking with people – you have to know how to ask the right questions. Show strong communication skills, and be persuasive, but also transparent and honest. Besides that, know you’re going to have to multitask!
